THE RED DEER

( cervus elaphus ) There is no disputing the fact that when you have seen a red deer stag in the rut that you are face to face with the largest of our land mammals.

WEIGHT variable (male =200 - 400llbs )

live weights ( female = 125 - 250 llbs )

PELAGE Summer: dark red to brown , rump and inner

thighs cream no spots ; Tail 6in long Stag grows a mane

before the rut . Winter dark brown to grey colour and rough

texture to coat.

ANTLERS : Typically branched. multi pointed, and round.

They shed there antlers march - april,

Breeding : Rut september- october. Calves born end may june . Twins very rare

SHOOTING SEASONS: Stags : Scotland ; july 1st - oct 20th.

Eng wals ; aug 1st - april 30th.

Hinds : Scotland ; oct 21st - feb 15th.

Eng wals ; nov 1st - feb 28th.

ROE DEER

(Capreolus capreolus ) The roe deer you see it then you dont .A beautiful deer and in my

opinion the best stalking a man can do he is always on the move

and you must have your wits about you at all times.

PELAGE : Summer : bright red -brown lighter below no spots

rump patch lemon - buff colour .Nose black chin white ; no

visible tail : Winter: dark brown - grey ; rump white buffs

out when alarmed.

ANTLERS : Typically six points. Shed ( Oct - Dec ) In velvet

up to ( Mar - Apr )

BREEDING : Rut ( july - Aug ) Fawns born may. Usually twins.

England ; ( Apr 1st - Oct 31st ) . Does ;Scotland ( Oct 21st - Mar 31st ) . England ( Nov 1st - Feb 28th )
